A Vietnamese Coast Guard plane has disappeared from radar while part of a search operation for a downed military jet.
On Tuesday, a Vietnamese fighter jet went missing near the South China Sea coastline. Yesterday, a coast guard plane with nine passengers that was part of the search party has also gone missing in the same area. The military jet, a Russian-made Sukhoi SU-30 MK2, was participating in a training flight off the coast of the Nghe An province in central Vietnam when it disappeared from radar. Authorities have been engaging in a coordinated search of the area for the past few days. One of the two fighter pilots was rescued from the sea on Wednesday, but the other pilot is still missing. Military officials have refused to speculate on the cause of the jet's disappearance.
The
coastguard plane, a CASA C212, that disappeared yesterday was carrying
nine people as part of the rescue operations for the fighter jet. An
anonymous source within the military said that the CASA crew believed it
had discovered the location of the missing fighter, and were descending
to approach it when it lost contact.
