Worried
by the spate of petitions and appeals over land in the Federal Capital
Territory (FCT), the Minister, Malam Muhammad Musa Bello, has inaugurated a
10-member Land Appeals and Petitions Committee to aid quick dispensation of
justice on land issues in the territory.
Inaugurating the Committee on Wednesday, the Minister noted that it was the
intention of the FCT Administration to deploy the right machinery to address
all land related petitions in the territory.
Represented
by the FCT Permanent Secretary, Dr. Babatope Ajakaiye, Bello urged the Committee to promptly address appeals and petitions from the public, saying
that the Committee was expected to mark the beginning of an end to injustice
and impunity in the FCT land administration processes.
He said the Committee was a Ministerial Inter-Departmental Team of all relevant Departments Headed by a Lawyer who is a Deputy Director, emphasising that the
essence was to allow fair play and justice in the dispensation of such cases
within record time.
“The terms of reference are; to investigate all land/property appeals and
petitions submitted to the FCTA and duly refer to the Committee, make
recommendations for resolution of the appeals and petitions for the
consideration of the Permanent Secretary and the Minister.
“Others, are to ensure due enforcement of all approved recommendations and
decisions taken in respect of any land/property petition and appeal case; to
monitor and evaluate compliance with FCTA decisions on land appeal and petition
cases, generate feedback for consideration as well as performing other
responsibilities as may be assigned by the Permanent Secretary and the Minister,” he said.
